Retaining walls and sandstone work on the Central Coast

Walls that turn a slope into usable garden, and stone that looks like it was always there.

Retaining walls for sloping Central Coast blocks

Plenty of Central Coast gardens sit on a slope. A well-built retaining wall holds the ground, sorts out the water and gives you level space for lawn, paving or garden beds.

Birdwood builds walls, steps and seat walls in sandstone. At Mount Colah, every wall was built from sandstone gathered on the site, laid with the stonemason Warren works with. On a failing cut bank, a structural retaining wall was built and then softened with planting.

Drainage and levels are worked out first, and where a wall needs engineering, Warren organises it.

What clients say about Warren and the team

Landscaping to a deadline

Luckily, I came across Warren. He went above and beyond of what I expected! Additionally, he has many good connections and also helped with a carpenter + stone works.

Warren is a very hard working man with an easy attitude and good sense of humour. Apart from the fantastic result done on time, it’s been an absolute pleasure working with him.

I can’t recommend Birdwood Landscape Design highly enough!

Rainforest garden, Avoca Beach

Warren and his team transformed our overgrown jungle into a beautiful rainforest garden. Everyone involved worked very hard in difficult conditions - rain, mud and more rain. But they got there and two years later, the garden is flourishing. We are very happy. Janet and Margaret, Avoca Beach

House and pool area on acreage

Birdwood landscaped our house and pool area on acreage 3 hours north of Sydney. Visits to our site pre construction for design feedback and material sourcing showed the level of commitment by Warren and his team to ensure the project was completed fast and efficiently. Thanks again!

What's included

  • A look at the slope. Levels, soil and where the water runs.
  • Sandstone walls and steps. Including stone reused from your own site.
  • Drainage behind the wall. So water has somewhere to go.
  • Engineering when needed. Organised through the engineers Warren works with.
  • Planting to soften it. So the wall sits into the garden.

How a landscape job runs

Three steps, with the design fee known before any drawing starts.

  1. Site meetingWarren comes out and walks the block with you to see the slope, the sun and the soil. If you go ahead with a design, the meeting fee comes off it.
  2. Fee proposal and planWarren sends a design fee proposal, then draws a plan for your block and the way you want to use it.
  3. Build, managedBirdwood builds it, with Warren running every trade, or you take the plan and build in stages.

Retaining walls and sandstone questions

Got a different question? Give Warren a call.

Do retaining walls need council approval?

It depends on the height, where the wall sits and your council's rules. Taller walls usually need an engineer's design. Ask about your site before you start.
